A 34-year-old Singaporean man behind the moniker @SharonLiew86 will be charged in court on Thursday 2 July 2020 with his suspected involvement in knowingly committing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of racial harmony.
The offence carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both.
A police report was made on April 18 when netizens spotted offensive content against Indian migrant workers posted by a Twitter user @SharonLiew86.
In 5 days on 23 April 2020, officers from the Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man behind the account @SharonLiew86 and investigated the man for promoting enmity between different racial groups.
The suspect was neither Chinese nor female. On the contrary, @sharonliew86 was a Malay man. Everything about the moniker @SharonLiew86 is false except the year in which the man came to Earth, 1986.
The police have reiterated that they will not condone acts that threaten racial and religious harmony in Singapore.
Any person who makes remarks that can cause ill-will and hostility between the different races and religions will be dealt with swiftly and firmly, the police added.
